Why Fernie

Fernie and the enchanting Elk Valley of southern British Columbia is one of the last great, accessible wilderness regions of North America, and is located just two hours north of Kalispell, Montana, and 3 hours south of Calgary, Alberta. Nestled in the heart of the towering Canadian Rockies, the majestic little town of 5,000 friendly Fernieites is surrounded by towering peaks, untrammeled wilderness, some of North America's greatest fly fishing for native and wild trout, and offers unparalleled powder skiing. There is superlative alpine skiing at one of Canada's finest ski areas, Fernie Alpine Resort, which receives more than 29 feet of fluffy powder every year. Fernie's Golf and Country Club offers 18 holes of championship nirvana beneath the towering crags of the peaks of the Three Sisters.

The Elk Valley is an area of four seasons with an array of uncrowded, high quality outdoor activities. It is a magical spot yearning to be discovered by the avid fly fisherman, outdoor enthusiast and skier at almost unbelievably reasonable prices compared to virtually any other Mountain Resort Community.

Like its American cousin, Jackson Hole (but without the glitter), Fernie is the gateway to stunning Elk Lakes Provincial Park, two Canadian National Parks (Waterton and Banff), and to Glacier National Park in the United States. It is the perfect blend of pristine wilderness, resort accouterments-excitingly remote yet conveniently accessible.

Fernie has a range of activities from easy cruising on country and logging roads to steep and technical single track wedged in old-growth forests, the Elk Valley offers some of the best mountain biking in British Columbia.

Fernie offers hundreds of miles of beautiful riding terrain for any skill and appetite, and you don't have to go far in Fernie before you are off the pavement and exploring. Local riders are riding every weekend in the summer adding to our extensive network of trails. A large network of well maintained forestry roads extend from Fernie through all the major valley systems. These roads, with their easy grades & gently meandering paths are great for families and cyclists just starting into the world of mountain biking. The roads also access most of the single tracks in the area.

Fernie Alpine Resort offers some of the best single track and downhilling around. The Elk Quad chair lift is a relaxing ride up the mountain so you can save your energy for one of the well marked, well maintained downhill single tracks.

Your mountain bike is more than just transportation, it is a lifestyle, and an adventure you must experience, and you can do it all right here in Fernie, just minutes from your Rocky Mountain Vacation accommodation.
